The Makers Guild in Wales

The Makers Guild in Wales is an independent charitable organisation which exists to further its aims as laid out in its Articles of Association:
“The Objects are to advance education for the public benefit in the Visual Arts and Crafts in particular but not exclusively by exhibitions of high quality hand made crafts and the provision of workshop programmes”

The Charity

owns and runs the gallery, Craft in the Bay, and is also a membership organisation, representing 89 Welsh craftmakers. The organisation runs a number of Charitable activities that include- Exhibitions that showcase craft and applied art from both emerging and renowned artists from Wales and further afield; and Education programmes, which include adult workshops, INSET workshops, outreach programmes and work placements for both students and school-age children, which are all seen as a vital to fulfilling our charitable aims. Ymddiriedolaeth elusennol annibynnol yw Urdd Gwneuthurwyr Cymru sy'n bodoli i hyrwyddo ei amcanion a nodir yn ei Erthyglau Cymdeithasiad:
“Yr Amcanion yw gwella addysg yng Nghelf Weledol a Chrefft er les y cyhoedd trwy arddangos yn arbennig ond nid yn unig, crefftwaith o waith llaw safon uchel ac i redeg rhaglen o weithdai.”
Yr Elusen sy'n piau a rhedeg y galeri, Crefft yn y Bae. Mae'r ymddiriedolaeth yn rhedeg nifer o weithgareddau elusennol sy'n cynnwys: Arddangosfeydd o grefftwaith a chelf gymhwysol gan artistiaid newydd ac adnabyddus o Gymru a gwledydd eraill,
Rhaglenni addysg sy'n cynnwys gweithdai ar gyfer oedolion ac INSET, rhaglenni ymestyn allan a phrofiad gwaith i fyfyrwyr a phlant oedran ysgol. Rydym yn eu gweld yn holl bwysig i ni gyflawni ein hamcanion elusennol.

Coterie Leather
Tracy Watkins was recently asked to demonstrate her Leather working skills for clients of a well known car company!!!
'I was asked by Landrover Swansea to make 120 hand stitched key fobs for the launch of the latest Range Rover SV. A lot of thought went into these keyfobs, including colour matching to the SV leather interior, with 12 stages to craft the keyfob from start to finish, from cutting, embossing with the SV logo, gluing, marking, pricking, stitching, edging, burnishing etc... all by hand. Was also asked to demo the handcrafting process at the launch party, and personalise the keyfobs for the invited guests. Had a queue most of the evening, but did manage to snaffle a few cocktails towards the end 😊'

The Makers Guild Craft Development Awards - Exhibition until 28 June

'Many thanks to for curating our work so beautifully and hosting a lovely afternoon. It was fascinating to hear the history of the Welsh Industries Fund overseen by, 'Y Werin Legacy Fund'. This has enabled the grant recipients to develop their practices with projects ranging from felt making, glass blowing, basketry, screen printing, woodwood, ceramics, textiles and of course hand push engraving. I enjoyed hearing about the other projects and sharing my progress so far'

Yesterday we welcomed Trustees from Y Werin Legacy Fund, who met the makers who had received The Makers Guild Craft Development Awards from the last three years. These Awards were generously funded by Y Werin Legacy Fund, and we learnt of the Funds part in helping Crafts in Wales over its history. The Makers gave Trustees a walk and talk around the exhibition and spoke of how the awards had helped their careers.
If you'd like to see how the awards have directly affected Craft making in Wales, then please do come to see this exhibition at Craft in the Bay.
The Exhibition continues until 28th June.
