Nantgarw China Works is the only surviving 19th century porcelain works in the United Kingdom. In the early years of the 19th century the most beautiful porcelain every created was made here by William Billingsley. Now part museum and part working pottery, Nantgarw is once again manufacturing the original softpaste porcelain. Over five hundred workshops take place at Nantgarw China Works each year

including ceramics, pottery, fused glass and willow weaving. Group visits are our speciality.

Standard entry with guided tour is £5.00

The museum has limited accessibility for wheelchairs. Although the majority of the site is accessible, the upper gallery can only be accessed via stairs.

“I am interested in a career working in museum archives but didn’t have any experience so decided to volunteer at Nantgarw. I have learnt about things such as object handling and storage. Now I want to get involved in creating digital archives.

I am getting really useful experience which I can add to my CV. It’s also a lovely place to be, there is a diverse range of volunteers from all sorts of backgrounds and I get to learn from them.”

Botanical artist Sally Stubbings creates contemporary porcelain at Nantgarw China Works, following a tradition begun by William Billingsley more than 200 years ago.

He used a secret recipe to produce the finest porcelain, often decorated with botanical art before it graced the tables of the rich and famous. Sally now uses techniques such as water erosion to produce delicate designs with a modern look.

See Sally’s work and learn more about Nantgarw’s fascinating role in the history of porcelain by taking a Guided Tour. Visit https://nantgarwchinaworksmuseum.co.uk/

Possibly one of the best secret tea-spots in south Wales?

Lovely to see Radyr Wednesday Walkers today and we're very glad to be able to start offering a cuppa in the garden again.

If you're a walking group, give us a call in advance and we'll make sure the tea urn is fired up and that there's plenty of space for you. Further enquiries about booking, access or for anything else, email us on [email protected]

In the background is the rebuilt Kiln II which is thought to date from the mid-late 19th century and most likely used to fire everyday pottery items after the works stopped producing porcelain.
