There we are - Dumfries Museum on the map and list at the Reveal and Connect Caribbean Natural Sciences knowledge sharing event in Glasgow in Friday. The Museum Curator spoke about the connections between Dumfries and Sir William Jardine, natural historian and Dr William Fergusson. Fergusson was born in Jamaica, the son of an enslaved woman and a man from Dumfries. He went on to become the Governor of Sierra Leone.

Dumfries Museum has been part of several National Museums Scotland partnership projects such as this in recent years. This has involved Curators from the National Museum visiting us to look at objects in our collection. The focus to date has been on Ancient Egyptian, Japanese and Chinese objects.

The latest Reveal and Connect project looked at African and Carribean collections. The results were really interesting and will be the basis of an exhibition in Dumfries Museum in autumn. While it is great to have such a long-established and varied collection, it is not without its challenges which is why projects and events like these are so helpful to us as they enable us to more accurately share the history of D&G.

A E Truckell, former curator of Dumfries Museum, holding the Lochmaben Ard beam, a 2,000-year-old Iron Age wooden plough. It was found in 1870 while draining in the Whitereed Moss, Elshieshields, near Lochmaben in Scotland, hence the name. It was carbon-dated to 80 BC ± 100 years.

It is on display in Dumfries Museum.

Old and New Bridges over the River Nith, Dumfries. You can see The Old Bridge House Museum on the left of the front bridge (it was white then).
The Old Bridge was built in 1432 and The New Bridge, or The Buccleuch Street Bridge, was built in 1790-95. This sepia photograph is from an album presented to the Kings Arms Hotel by local businesses in Dumfries and Maxwelltown. The businesses placed advertisements in the album. Produced by A and T Hunter (Stationers, 142 High Street, Dumfries).
Visit The Old Bridge Museum Monday to Saturday 10-5 or Sundays 2-5.

Made by Brownies from The Stewartry, this colourful artwork was presented to Mary Mitchell, GirlGuiding County Commissioner from 1962 to 1971.
The images celebrate her achievements in this role including a pageant in Castle Douglas, camps at Irongray and the opening of the 1st Brownie House at Auchencairn.
The Brownies have also fixed fake coins on in recognition of her fundraising efforts - including sponsored walks and garden schemes.
On display until September in Dumfries Museum's 'Celebrating GirlGuiding in D&G' exhibition.

We've got some fantastic TripAdvisor reviews recently. Our visitors are noticing all the work we've been doing in recent years to the displays and interactive activities. If you haven't visited in a while, you'll notice the difference (and some things never change, thankfully, the Camera Obscura is always amazing!)
