Captain Cook Schoolroom Museum The Schoolroom Museum in Great Ayton is housed in a building once used as a charity school, it was here Captain James Cook received his early education.

Please check our weekly posts to verify opening times and dates, which are subject to change. The Trust manages the upkeep and development of the museum, on behalf of the village and local community. The museum, the site of the original schoolroom, houses an exciting educational display and interaction of the early life and achievements of James Cook.

Wishing good luck to Boro today!

Beautiful sunshine is hopefully on the menu for the week ahead.

This coming week the Museum will be open 1pm until 4pm as usual, from Wed to Sun EXCEPT we are closed on Friday 29th May. We are however OPEN for Bank Holiday Monday 25th May as a bonus!☀️

Today it’s been a beautiful sunny Sunday! We hope everyone is recharged and ready for a new week…

This week the Museum will be open 1pm until 4pm as usual, from Wed 13th to Sat 16th May EXCEPT we are closed on Friday 15th May. We are also closed next Sunday 17th May.

The following week we will be open the same days and hours between Wed 20th to Sat 23rd May (closed Friday and Sunday), however we are OPEN for Bank Holiday Monday 25th May and hoping for sunshine. ☀️🤞

This week the museum is open as normal between 1-4pm, Wednesday to Sunday, with the exception of Friday 8th May when we are closed.

This week at the Museum we are open 1-4pm, Wednesday 22nd to Friday 24th and also Sunday 26th April (closed Saturday).

This week the museum is open for our usual hours on afternoons between 1pm and 4pm, but from Wednesday 15th through to Sunday 19th April.

Ahoy! Spring is in the air and what nice weather we are having!

This week the museum is open for our usual hours on afternoons between 1pm and 4pm, but only on Wednesday 8th, Thursday 9th and Saturday 11th April.

Next week, for the same afternoon hours, we are open Wed-Fri and on Sunday (closed only on Saturday).

It’s museum season again… please drop by to support your local museum. Bring your children to see what school looked like for Captain Cook, and find out more about our local heritage. 🤩

We sell a range of books, gifts, and children’s toys, but entry is FREE. Donations are however always gratefully accepted to help keep our museum open and on the map.

We are BACK!!!

MUSEUM RE-OPENING WEDNESDAY 1st APRIL 2026 🤩

It’s finally here…

The museum re-opens to visitors for the spring/summer tourist season from Wednesday onwards, between the hours of 1pm and 4pm, and on the following dates:

✅ We expect to be open every Wednesday through to Sunday inclusive, each week, until further notice; and
✅ Most other Bank Holidays

‼️ We are yet to clarify if we will be open on Easter Saturday 4th April so please check back for news in this regard. We will be open Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday.

⚠️ Before you travel please do always check back on our page for the latest updates or any changes to our usual opening times. Occasionally we may have to change our schedule.
