Behind The Streets: The Hidden Work of Museum Conservation Volunteers

⭐NEW exhibition opens Tuesday 6 October⭐

Our wonderful Conservation Volunteers make magic happen behind the scenes, helping us maintain the thousands of objects on display on our Victorian Street 🙌

This exhibition shares the objects they’ve carefully cleaned, the stories behind their favourite finds, and the difference they make to every visitor’s experience.

Throwback to a beauty of a poster design....

Revisiting a post from a while back this Monday, this gorgeous 1930s, multi coloured poster advertising Abbey House Museum was created by artist Maurice A Brownfoot. We think it's rather pretty!

Our answer to yesterday's 'what where when?' is:

What? Two men carrying a table in to the back of a van with writing on the side: if you looked closely the writing reads 'Turnbulls Removals Storage Packing & Shipping' with a Leeds/ Roundhay Road phone number. Britannia Turnbull's of Leeds started life as a removals company in 1867. The head of the Turnbulls company in the 1960s was Mayor of Leeds Colonel Lawrence Turnbull, who had been awarded the Military Cross in World War Two and was also a local magistrate.

When? We reckon this picture was taken in the 1950s or 60s.

Aand....

Where? This picture was taken around the vicinity of what is now the Light Shopping Centre- hence the difficulty getting anywhere close with a vehicle now. Well done Tommy Brannigan for the correct answer !
