NASA has unveiled plans for a Moon base 🌕
The $20 billion project will unfold over the next seven years and will consist of several phases:
1️⃣ Phase 1 (now - 2029): Rovers and technology demos will be sent to the lunar surface, analysing its potential and the risks involved in different areas. We expect 25 launches, with 4 metric tonnes of cargo set to land on the Moon.
2️⃣ Phase 2 (2029 - 2032): NASA will set up the power (nuclear, solar power and fission reactors) needed to establish initial base operations.
3️⃣ Phase 3 (by 2032): Humans will be able to live on the Moon in ‘semi-permanent’ housing, with rovers allowing astronauts to travel long-distances across the rocky lunar terrain.
📍 The Moon’s south pole is a particularly appealing location – resources like frozen water in the shadowed craters could be used for drinking water and to extract oxygen to breathe.
🔴 A lunar base would allow more continuous science exploration and experimentation. It would also make extraction of valuable resources easier. In the endeavour to make a Moon base, there would be great economic and technological advancement along with innovations that could make life on Earth better as an added benefit. And ultimately it would provide a stepping stone and foundation to prepare for future exploration to places like Mars.
