Today marks the centenary of ceramicist, Julia Carter Preston (1926-2012).

Carter Preston had a long relationship with the Bluecoat, occupying a studio at the venue for some 50 years and exhibiting regularly at the Bluecoat Display Centre, as well as occasionally in shows in our galley. She was commissioned by the Bluecoat several times to make commemorative ceramics.

Our Director of Cultural Legacies Bryan Biggs reflects on Julia Carter Preston's long association with the Bluecoat in celebration of her centenary.

Spotted any snakes slithering around the Bluecoat lately?

Inspired by Debjani Banerjee’s gallery exhibition and the garden trail created by our Out of the Blue art clubs, our Young Blue Room Creative Assistant TJ Mars has been hard at work! He’s designed fantastic new activity sheets for our children’s corner and a brand new animation featured on our hub TV screens.

During his 12- week placement, TJ has been practising his illustration skills, experimenting with rotoscoping and printmaking and gaining experience of careers within the arts.

‘Bluecoat has been really inclusive and accomodating- allowing me to bring my own ideas and equipment and being able to apply my skills to a work environment.’ - TJ Mars

Swipe through to see TJ’s brilliant work!

Young Blue Room is the Bluecoat’s programme of creative support for young people with support needs and is funded by the Health Lottery Foundation.
