The Emery Walker Trust

The Emery Walker Trust Welcome to 7 Hammersmith Terrace, the former home of Emery Walker and the last authentic Arts & Crafts interior in Britain.

No. 7 Hammersmith Terrace is the last authentic Arts & Crafts interior in Britain and the former home of Emery Walker; typographer, antiquary and friend and mentor to William Morris. The sober Georgian exterior of our tall terraced house on the River Thames at Hammersmith, west London, hides a secret; its interior is an Arts & Crafts gem, with the decoration and furnishings preserved as they were

in the lifetime of printer Emery Walker who lived here from 1903-1933. As you enter 7 Hammersmith Terrace you will discover wallpapers and carpets by William Morris, furniture and glassware by Philip Webb and embroidery by May Morris. This is to name but a few of the protagonists who, through their close friendships with Emery Walker, have helped to create the lively and beautiful interiors you can still experience today.

For this week's we're showcasing a variety of objects from the , all of which relate to Elizabeth de Haas, which are usually in storage. This small in the bedroom was put together by AJ, our curatorial intern, during their final week with us.

It is a playful rendering of Elizabeth's presence at the house, as if she and Dorothy just returned from their and was putting together the photo album of their trip. AJ says their aim with this display was to showcase that Elizabeth had a life outside her service to others and her efforts to preserve No. 7 and its contents.

Visitors will be familiar with the three bellied cream jugs decorated by Alfred & Louise Powell which are on the table in our drawing room. This jug however, decorated by and with the monogram β€˜EW’, isn't on open display. The Powells were friends of the Walkers and made their home in the Cotswolds in the 1920's, near Emery Walker's country home, Daneway.
