The Emery Walker Trust Welcome to 7 Hammersmith Terrace, the former home of Emery Walker and the last authentic Arts & Crafts interior in Britain.

No. 7 Hammersmith Terrace is the last authentic Arts & Crafts interior in Britain and the former home of Emery Walker; typographer, antiquary and friend and mentor to William Morris. The sober Georgian exterior of our tall terraced house on the River Thames at Hammersmith, west London, hides a secret; its interior is an Arts & Crafts gem, with the decoration and furnishings preserved as they were

in the lifetime of printer Emery Walker who lived here from 1903-1933. As you enter 7 Hammersmith Terrace you will discover wallpapers and carpets by William Morris, furniture and glassware by Philip Webb and embroidery by May Morris. This is to name but a few of the protagonists who, through their close friendships with Emery Walker, have helped to create the lively and beautiful interiors you can still experience today.

This blue and white Kangxi-style plate, likely made in the late or early 20th, is decorated with stylised . The reverse has a pictorial mark depicting a square, four-legged bronze incense burner.

The largest body of marks found on Kangxi actually do not have reign marks as the emperor issued an edict forbidding the use of these on non-imperial porcelain in case the pieces were broken or discarded. Pictorial marks were therefore often used by potters.

We found a wonderful piece of in our for all the out there! Emery Walker and his daughter Dorothy shared a love of Arabian horses, buying the mare Astola from Crabbet Park Stud Farm in Sussex. This piece was very likely embroidered by Dorothy.

Who's in need of another coffee today? ☕️

This coffee grinder with a cast-iron base, pull-out drawer, and wooden handle probably gets overlooked when visitors first enter reception (once our former kitchen). Attached to its front is a worn brass plate naming the maker, 'A. Kenrick & Sons Patent Coffee Mill', around the Royal coat of arms. Although grocers in the 19th century often ground the beans, it also became fashionable to do so at home. Archibald Kenrick, an iron founder, patented his new box type design in 1815.

We might have felt like melting, but last week's heatwave gave our a boost!

The vine, planted in the in 1900, and which traversed into the conservatory, was taken from a cutting in the painter William Hogarth’s garden. Our team of garden volunteers make sure it gets pruned right back, but it continues to produce grapes every year!
