Coleham Pumping Station Coleham Pumping Station is run by Shrewsbury Steam Trust. The pump station houses 2 massive beam engines and boilers built in 1901.

Open days we have lots of attractions including ride on railways, tours, model railways, picnic area & light refreshments English Heritage said in a report - The Pumping Station at Coleham, Shrewsbury, is a remarkably complete example of a relatively small plant, which has survived with few losses and little alteration. Such alterations as there have been as with the addition of the automated coal hopper installed in the mid-C20, or the removal of the original 'Economiser', serve to show advances in the technology associated with the industry and the refinement of the machinery on site to allow for its better functioning. Such alterations are to be expected on an operational industrial site and do not detract from its overall interest, provided that the majority of the original machinery is in situ, as is the case at Coleham. Original machinery includes two Woolf compound rotative beam engines and two Cornish boilers, all of which are in working order. In addition, the building has a characterful architectural treatment with elaborate decorative stone dressings and a tall, panelled chimney stack to the rear. The street front is particularly effective and gives the building the appearance of a small, decorative Non-conformist
chapel. All the principal parts of the original pumping station - engine house, boiler house, coal store and
chimney are intact on site and relatively fragile features such as the octagonal louvered vent on the ridge of the engine house are complete as originally built. The original features extend to the brick walls at either side of the site and the low wall with piers and railings facing the street.

The 17th October 2026 marked the first time we’ve invited visitors into Coleham whilst in steam since 2022. This was a private open day for all the Shrewsbury Steam Rally members as a thank you for there £5000 donation when we were facing permanent closure earlier this year. Julia Buckley MP our local MP also visited, She has visited several times since our closure supporting us along the way. The day was a success in all ways, from training new members, including the 3rd generation of the Targett family to run Coleham, ironing out any niggles and above all enjoying having steam back to visitors. We are now working towards getting ready for our Christmas open day to the public on the 12th December 2026, we hope to see you there!

Thank you to every one who has donated and also set up a monthly donation! As we move closer to 2027 we still have a lot of work to do, to fully open with all our attractions to the public! Your donations help us hit our £3000 goal to cover our running costs for 2027. Did you know our coal is now imported from other country’s at almost 3 times the cost to meet with government next zero plans. Instead of using our own supplies in the UK, imported coal is also of much lesser quality and produces a lot more smoke. If you can help with our costs please donate using the link.
