✨From The A-Z Museum of St Andrews History✨

This archive image is a school photo from Clifton Bank School in 1912. Founded by John Paterson in 1856, it was one of a number of small, independent, fee-paying schools for the sons of the well-to-do. One of the school's more famous pupils was Field Marshal Haig. The school closed in 1917 having lost most of the teachers in the First World War.

Part of a group known as the Scottish Colourists, Samuel John Peploe (1871–1935) was a Scottish Post-Impressionist painter. Peploe is best known for his still life paintings, depicting fruit, ceramics, and flowers. His early works were darker, while later works show flatter, more vibrant compositions with increased abstraction.

Come and see this artwork and much more in our Living Colour Exhibition, part of RSA200.
