Capturing the ephemeral beauty of York’s bustling city streets, here Michael John Ashcroft, ROI casts his gaze upon the iconic Betty’s Café Tea Rooms.

As absorbing as it is accomplished, ‘Betty’s Tea Rooms, York’ is a firm favourite among us here at the gallery, a stone’s throw away from this delectable city landmark. 🤍

A spill of sunshine first draws the eye in Julian Mason’s absorbing portrayal of ‘Church Street, Staithes’. Replete with terracotta roofs and pastel coloured cottages, the scene welcomes us to meander down to the sea, amid a warming summer’s breeze.

The painting is one in a series of new work, produced during Julian’s first visit to the quintessential North Yorkshire fishing village.

We hope he returns soon! 🌊

It is our utmost delight to welcome Marissa Weatherhead to York Fine Arts.

Bold, rhythmic, and unapologetically abundant, Marissa’s work balances delicate, stylized forms with confident outlines to create rich, harmonious paintings that are gentle and striking in equal measure.

Combined with her vivid, expressive colour palette and choice of subject—often seafood, flowers, fruits and glasses of wine—her paintings speak of bounty, celebration and the simple pleasures of specific moments in time.

View our all new collection of original paintings by Marissa now, both in the gallery and on our website, including ‘Maritime Memory’, ‘Summer and Seafood’ and ‘Sea View’, pictured above.

Welcome Marissa! 💐🦀

It’s the last chance to view 𝙄𝙣𝙩𝙤 𝙁𝙤𝙘𝙪𝙨, closing this Sunday. So, if you’re in York, stop by and head up to our first floor to experience every sublime detail.

Featured in the show is Andrew Talbot’s note-perfect ‘Entente Cordiale’. On the work, Andrew tells us:

“Château Mouton Rothschild is recognised as one of the finest Bordeaux wines in the world. These two bottles date from the 2004 vintage.

For more than 70 years, the château has commissioned celebrated artists to design unique labels for each vintage. Contributors have included Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí, Marc Chagall, and Francis Bacon, among others.

The 2004 vintage marked the centenary of the Entente Cordiale. To commemorate this occasion, King Charles III (then HRH The Prince of Wales) was invited to design the label. His artwork depicts the elegant pine trees of Cap d’Antibes.”

It is with pleasure that we welcome one of Yorkshire’s best-loved artists to the gallery, mixed-media painter Kate Lycett. 💚

Kate is renowned for her vibrant, dynamic landscapes of Yorkshire and beyond, gracefully weaving warmth and draughtsmanship into every line and undulation of the land.

Her background in textile design is evident through her use of colour and pattern, layering inks, acrylics and watercolours to achieve a rich depth of colour and texture as she interprets the world around her.

Each scene is finished with an embellishment of glinting gold leaf and gold thread, drawing the eye across the landscape and highlighting its paths and curves. Kate’s work is as alive and ever changing as light itself.

A selection of Kate’s signed and embellished limited-edition prints are now available at the gallery, including ‘Cragg Vale’ (𝓈𝑒𝑒 𝒾𝓂𝒶𝑔𝑒 𝟤) and ‘Museum Gardens’ (𝓈𝑒𝑒 𝒾𝓂𝒶𝑔𝑒 𝟥).
