Nearly 200 guests from the international art world gathered on May 7 for the opening of “Matriclysm: An Archaeology of Connections Lost” by Jewel. The evening featured an exclusive preview of the exhibition, intimate walkthroughs with the artist, curator Joe Thompson, Curator-at-Large for Crystal Bridges, and Rod Bigelow, whose institution presented the show.

For the occasion, Jewel wore the iconic Schiaparelli paintbrush gown designed by Daniel Roseberry - a surrealist masterpiece adorned with 6,000 hand-embroidered golden brass brushes that move like painted strokes, merging fashion and art. After the intimate exhibition tour, Jewel performed a live melody from the installation Seven Sisters, an immersive sound and light piece that transforms data from the Plaiedes constellation into a flickering light pattern that moves among seven hand-blown glass orb sculptures. 

It was a true honour for us at Salone Verde to host an event of such international resonance, bringing together artists, curators, collectors, and friends from across the global art community.

“Matriclysm” by is presented in the association with and curated by John Thompson, curator-at-large for the Museum, and marks the largest presentation of Jewel’s visual art practice to date. The exhibition brings together new paintings, sculpture, large-scale installations, tapestry, and immersive sound works by the artist reflecting on motherhood, feminine memory, and humanity’s connection to the natural world.

17:45 - 18:00: Jewel will perform a short piece to accompany the exhibition. Please note, in an effort to prevent disruption, entry will not be allowed during the performance

ENTRY BY INVITATION ONLY

Matriclysm will be open to public
from May 6 - November 22, 2026,
concurrent to the Venice Biennale 2026

“Matriclysm: An Archeology of Connections Lost”
is a new exhibition by American artist and singer-songwriter Jewel.

Visual artist and multi-platinum singer-songwriter Jewel brings her multidisciplinary art practice to Venice with an immersive exhibition of painting, sculpture, installation, tapestry, and sound works created especially for this project.

Curated by Joe Thompson and presented in association with Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art , the exhibition explores themes of motherhood, feminine power, and the consequences of its loss.

The exhibition will feature never-before-seen painting, sculpture, tapestry, installation, and sound works that Jewel has created specifically for this exhibition, the largest presentation of this multi-faceted artist to date.

“At first glance, this exhibition centers on issues of femininity, power, and ecological consciousness, but at its core it is about memory, both profoundly personal and alarmingly global,” comments Jewel. “If something of a cautionary tale, my hope is that the show reminds us what it feels like to be in closer harmony, inviting us to unearth ways to reconnect us to ourselves, each other, and the world around us.”

Visitors encounter luminous glass constellations, surreal paintings, myth-inspired textiles, and immersive soundscapes composed by the artist. Data-driven works such as “Heart of the Ocean”transform real-time environmental information into music and light, developed in collaboration with scientists from NASA, Stanford University, and University of California, Berkeley.

A central work in the exhibition, “First Mother”, is a monumental sculpture created in collaboration with Patrick Bongoy , exploring the idea of a shared human origin and the generative power of motherhood.

What a beautiful way to close this year at Salone Verde! 💚🎄

Our heartfelt thanks to Claudia Kohlhoff and her wonderful team for an unforgettable installation that filled our space with warmth, light, and creativity during these magical winter months in Venice. We’re also deeply grateful to all the organizers and the many inspiring people who worked together on this project.

"TEXTILES TRADITION TRANSFORMATION" was received with great enthusiasm and emotional connection. Visitors described the installation as visually stunning, poetic, and magical, praising its thoughtful curation, sensitive use of light, music, and video, and the elegant presentation. The exhibition invited reflection on sustainability, memory, and the reuse of textiles, while awakening a sense of closeness and nostalgia. We’re proud to host such meaningful projects at Salone Verde art & social club and to bring together incredible artists, designers, researchers, and creatives.

Wearable Objects: The German Bed Linens

Once simple rural German bed linens, now a work of transformation.

Claudia Kohlhoff and her couturiers deconstructed the fabric, using as little as possible, guided by its own beauty: buttonholes, woven selvedges, and checkered patterns.

The result are wearable objects, contemporary yet intimate, carrying traces of domestic history reimagined through artistic collaboration.

TEXTILES TRADITION TRANSFORMATION

Architect and collector Claudia Kohlhoff invites us to discover how history, craftsmanship, and transformation are woven together.

Since 2018, with the help of young couturiers Claudia has been transforming the traditional textiles from her collection into so-called “wearable objects”, unique garments that unite material memory and contemporary design.

In this post, we’d like to share the stories behind some of these remarkable pieces.

🪡 Wearable Objects I
"Brokatkostüm"
Made from Russian silk brocade and Turkish silk bed linen. The brocade shown at the 1889 Paris World’s Fair was discovered in an Istanbul bazaar. It was remounted onto transparent silk, becoming a precious ladies costume.

👗Wearable Objects II
An asymmetrical jacket, baggy trousers, a reversible jacket "Kastenjacke", a long coat "Karomantel", and a skirt with different layers.
Created from rural German bed linens, the fabric was deconstructed and reshaped with minimal intervention. Buttonholes, selvedges, and irregular proportions guided the new form, celebrating simplicity and restraint.

🌸 Object III
A warm winter costume.
Born from a pink wool mattress cover used by Turkish nomads. Layered with cotton and linen, it transforms warmth and resilience into a tactile winter garment.

TEXTILES TRADITION TRANSFORMATION
Exhibition by Claudia Kohlhoff

Architect and textile collector Claudia Kohlhoff (b. 1946, Germany) studied architecture in Aachen, Zurich, and Stuttgart, where she graduated. After years of architectural practice shared with her husband Sven and countless travels, she developed a deep passion for textiles discovered in bazaars, flea markets, and small local shops around the world.

Guided by her personal aesthetic rather than museum criteria, Claudia built an extensive textile collection. Since 2018, she has been transforming these materials into garments, wearable “objects”, developed through a complex, sensitive, and creative process with highly skilled young couturiers.

Each piece reinterprets traditional textiles into a new, contemporary form, merging tradition and transformation, the past and the present, the textile and the body.

The process and its many details are documented through artistic photography.
