Schuyler, the Revolutionary War Major General, US Senator, agrarian, and businessman. Located in Albany, NY, Schuyler Mansion was home to Philip J. He and his wife, Catharine Van Rensselaer, descended from affluent and powerful Dutch families. Together they raised eight children in this home. The home was built in a Georgian style, reflecting Schuyler's English tastes, on a bluff overlooking the H

udson River. Originally situated on an 80-acre tract of land, the grounds once included an orchard, formal gardens, and a working farm. Throughout the Schuyler family occupancy from 1763-1804, the mansion was the site of military strategizing, political hobnobbing, elegant social affairs, and an active family life. It was also home to more than fifty enslaved laborers, servants, and artisans over that span. From mid-May through October, visitors can enjoy guided tours of the mansion, as well as an orientation exhibition in the Visitor Center focusing on the 18th century history of the site and its inhabitants. Temporary exhibitions and public programs are scheduled year-round. Tours for school and adult groups, as well as outreach programs, are also available. On this day in 1776 William Duer sent a letter to Major General Philip Schuyler, making an introduction for a man named John Carter.

"Permit me to introduce to your acquaintance
my Friend Mr. Carter who has been appointed
by the Continental Congress one of the Commissioners for
settling Public Accts in the Northern Department
He is though Young in Years, an Old fashion’d English
Whig, A Circumstance that will not I am sensible
depretate him in Your Estimation –"

John Carter was the alias used by Englishman John Barker Church while he served as an auditor of the Northern Department. Congress believed that Schuyler was embezzling military funds for personal use based on how much money he was requesting for the operations of the Northern Department, and so his finances were audited. A year later John Carter would elope with Schuyler’s oldest daughter, Angelica.

On this day in 1786, Mary Ann Sawyer was born in Newburyport, Massachusetts to Micajah and Sybil Sawyer.

She married Philip Jeremiah Schuyler in 1807, his second wife, as his first passed in 1805. After Philip Jeremiah’s sister Cornelia’s death, her husband left their five young children to go to Europe, with Mary Ann writing to her sister-in-law Caty,

“I understand Morton is
leading a very splendid & gay life with a handsome
french Mistress in London so much for Parental
tenderness I sometimes think he has completely
abandoned his children”

Mary Ann and Philip Jeremiah would end up adopting these children, bringing the total number of children in their household to 13.

This month we will be offering the focus tour, Hear Them Now: Stories of the Enslaved. Over the course of their lifetimes, the Schuylers enslaved more than sixty people on both their Albany and Saratoga properties. On this tour, guests will gain insight into the lives of some of the people once enslaved by the Schuylers, like Silva and her family, Harre, Prince, and Diana.

We will be offering this tour Thursdays and Saturdays at 1pm throughout the month of September.

Reservations are required. Reservations can be made by calling (518) 434-0834.

Looking for something to do this Labor Day? Schuyler Mansion will be open for tours on Monday September 7th. Tours are every hour on the hour- the first one leaves at 11am and the last one leaves at 4pm.

Tonight, 8/25 at 6PM the Friends of Schoharie Crossing meeting and Presentation, Never Let Fear or Common Sense Hold Me Back with Bob Addis inside the Enders House.
8/29 at 1PM come ROCK the LOCK with DeVer and The Red Wagon as they perform at Yankee Hill Lock.
8/30 at 6PM, we launch the 34th Annual Not Just for Kids Storytelling series with Claire Nolan.

Then in September we'll also have Canal Store Saturday on September 12th in conjunction with Girl Scouts Love State Parks Weekend at Schoharie Crossing. The site will be offering Basket Coiling and more as our staff will also be conducting outreach programs in the local area in the coming month, so keep an eye out for those programs.

On this day in 1857, Philip and Catharine Schuyler’s youngest daughter, Caty passed away at the age of 76. From a young age, Caty Schuyler took a great interest in academics, and her father encouraged her to pursue her interests in reading and geography.

As an adult, Caty married twice, first to Samuel Malcolm and then to James Cochran, both of whom predeceased her. Caty was the last surviving child of Catharine and Philip Schuyler, outliving her older sister Elizabeth by two years.
