🚨 PSA: What Goes Into Ethical Bone Cleaning 🚨

When I clean the bones of a beloved pet, the process is long, meticulous, and intentionally not shared in full because it is graphic.

Bones do not “clean themselves.”

Each animal must be carefully skinned and disarticulated. Organs are removed. Every muscle is separated from every bone by hand. What remains is dried slowly in a sterile, controlled environment.

The bones are then introduced small piece by small piece to dermestid beetles to prevent ammonia poisoning and colony collapse. After that, every tooth is removed, every tiny joint is fully separated, and the bones enter daily degreasing—often multiple times per day—for six months to over a year, depending on the species.

Lightening is a delicate final step where mistakes can permanently damage bone. Once complete, each tooth is glued back into its exact position one by one, and your pet is prepared to go home.

I don’t show much of this process because it’s graphic—but that does not mean it’s simple, quick, or effortless.

I’ve been crazy swamped. If you haven’t heard from me even though you’ve messaged me, please message me again and don’t take it personally! On a sidenote, has anybody else read or listen to Dungeon Crawler Carl?! 10/10 would recommend the audiobook! There are so many different voices and they are all done so well. I think if I was reading this, I would be inclined to get confused but listening to it has been a delight.
I got started yesterday on a full body memorial. This client has been waiting patiently for months because of my lack of freezer Space. I was able to get a good amount of him in with the bugs right away. Usually, I like to try to dry things out more, but my baby buggies are hungry!!

The process took hours — careful technique, steady patience, and respect in every movement. What’s left behind isn’t just a specimen… it’s a symbol.
