The Battleship New Jersey is the longest, fastest, most decorated battleship in history. From 1943 to 1991, she served in WWII, Korean War, Vietnam War, Cold War, and the Persian Gulf. The mission of the Battleship New Jersey Museum and Memorial is to restore, preserve, and exhibit the continuing history of the USS New Jersey and those who worked and served on her so their service will continue to educate and inspire future generations.

A battleship is built from steel, but she is brought to life by people.

This WWII collage of BB-62 officers reminds us that behind every battle star, every mile steamed, and every mission completed were men entrusted with leading Big J and her crew.

Their faces are part of her story. Their service is part of her legacy. You can visit and explore that legacy for yourself on the Camden Waterfront. Visit us at www.battleshipnewjersey.org for more details.

Today, we honor Battleship New Jersey’s 83rd commissioning anniversary!

On May 23, 1943, BB-62 was commissioned at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, officially joining the United States Navy and beginning a lifetime of service that would carry her through World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Lebanon, and the Persian Gulf.

This rare commissioning day footage captures the birth of America’s most decorated battleship and the start of a legacy defined by service, sacrifice, courage, honor, and tradition.

Watch this remarkable piece of history and join us in wishing the “Gallant Lady” a very happy 83rd birthday.

“Officers and crew of the USS New Jersey, man our ship and bring her to life!”

On May 23, 1943, those words marked the commissioning of USS NEW JERSEY (BB-62) at the Philadelphia Navy Yard.

Eighty-three years later, just six miles down the river from where she was brought to life, America’s most decorated battleship is still here, still teaching, still inspiring, and still alive through the stories of those who served aboard her.

Happy Commissioning Day, Big J!

Last week we were happy to welcome another former crew member back aboard.

David Moody served as a Radarman 3rd Class aboard Battleship New Jersey in 1969. We were honored to take him back to the Combat Information Center (CIC) and see him take his seat at the radar.

In 1986, Battleship New Jersey sailed into the Sea of Okhotsk on a Cold War freedom of navigation mission. The Soviets scrambled cruisers, frigates, helicopters, and bombers to shadow the ship.

Every sailor aboard was inducted into the Order of the Bear's Lair, one of the rarest unofficial certifications in U.S. naval history.

Today aboard the Battleship New Jersey, we were honored to host the commissioning ceremony for Rutgers/Princeton Naval ROTC “Black Dragon” Battalion.

Six new Ensigns and one Marine Corps 2nd LT took the oath and began their journey as commissioned officers in the United States Navy & Marine Corps. It was a powerful reminder that the legacy of service carried by this ship continues through the next generation of leaders.

To the newly commissioned officers, Bravo Zulu. The nation is fortunate to have you standing the watch. Fair winds and following seas.
