Our organization started in 1992 as the Elgin Puerto Rican Parade Committee. Back in the mid-2000's, as the Puerto Rican Heritage Organization, when we hosted Elgin's Puerto Rican festival it cost us approximately $60,000. This didn't include what it cost for our annual scholarship pageants, dignitary's dinner and parade we organized. Twenty years later costs have increased substantially and that's why we're hoping you give serious consideration to donating to us (Boricuas Unidos de Elgin, a tax-exempt nonprofit organization) during next week's as we seek to bring back a celebration of Puerto Rican culture, history, music and food!

Yesterday’s opening of “Aquí en Chicago,” the Chicago History Museum’s first comprehensive exhibition of Latino history was beautiful. The place was PACKED and the opening panel was standing room only.

I am extremely proud to share that my essay “Chicagolandia: Latine Politics, Work, and Art in Greater Chicago” was part of the exhibit catalog. I don’t do this work alone, and try to bring others along when I can, so I want to thank all the community collaborators who contributed to this essay. You all did the work – I just wrote it down.

The exhibit is open for the next year – please visit!
