Our friends at WIND & WAVE Surf Shop are getting us ready for an epic Memorial Day surf session with a live double-hitter on Wednesday, May 20th.

Catch a live screening of 'Bustin' Down the Door', the 2008 documentary film narrated by Edward Norton that follows iconic surf legends Shaun Tomson, Wayne 'Rabbit' Bartholomew, Ian Cairns, Mark Richards, Michael Tomson and Peter Townend, chronicling the rise of professional surfing around the world in the 1970s.

Nate Lytle is looking for volunteers to help and people who can bring soft top surfboards for the Choice Living Surf Camp at 8:15 am on June 6th! The camp will run from 8:30 to 11:30 am.

Choice Living Community is a local day activity center that offers individualized programs to advance the achievement and knowledge for adults living with disabilities in the areas of vocational, life and social skills. www.facebook.com/ChoiceLiving1

BIG THANKS to all our volunteers, the Mission-Aransas NERR, Port Aransas-The Island Life, Texas Master Naturalists, Republic Services and the Jetty Boat captain and crew for helping to make today's cleanup on San Jose Island a great success!! In 2 hours, 53 volunteers cleaned up 1,430 pounds of trash. We filled 287 Up2U trash bags, each one with an average of 16 plastic bottles for a total of 4,592! We also removed about 100 1-gallon and larger plastic bottles, a variety of ropes, foam floats and a couple 55-gallon drums.

This is a unique cleanup since everything must be transported over to Port Aransas for disposal. It takes a lot of work but as you can tell from the smiles, it's worth it!

The San Jose Island Cleanup is on for this Saturday, May 16th! Due to traffic on North Padre Island from the Beach to Bay marathon, we have moved the start time to 9:30 am. If you are coming from Corpus Christi, you can alternately drive to Aransas Pass and take the ferry over to Port A.

We will meet at 9:30 am at Fisherman's Wharf in Port Aransas to take the 10 am jetty boat across to San Jose Island.

Bring your sunblock, a hat and a refillable water bottle. The boat ride is free for volunteers and we will provide gloves, trash bags, snacks and cold water to refill your bottle.

Be prepared to roll up your sleeves and make a difference. Last year, we removed about 1,500 pounds of trash including 3,000 plastic bottles!

We regret that we've had to postpone the beach and jetty cleanup on San Jose (St. Joe's) Island due to the forecast for stormy weather this Saturday, May 9th. We hope to reschedule it for the following Saturday, May 16th. Stay tuned!

Hey everyone, we're going to skip our May chapter meeting due to Memorial Day BUT our June meeting will be at The Gaff in Port Aransas with State Representative Todd Hunter giving an update on public beach access and other coastal issues!
