What is Memorial Day to the African American?

Did you know the earliest Memorial Day observances was organized by formerly enslaved African Americans in Charleston, South Carolina, in 1865? Just weeks after the Civil War ended, they gathered to give Union soldiers—many of whom fought for their freedom—a proper burial and a public tribute of song, prayer, and procession.

Memorial Day is a time to remember all who gave their lives in service to this country. Today, we also lift up the deep and often overlooked contributions of African Americans who helped shape this day of remembrance.

Let us honor them by remembering their history—and carrying it forward.
