Did someone say dance? 🕺🪩

Artists Lavinia Schulz and Walter Holdt created a series of fantastical, futuristic costumes—hybrid artworks synthesizing dance, fashion, and music. 🎶 The insect-like Maskenfigur "Toboggan Mann" (1923) is one of their many designs constructed out of materials like wood, leather, rope, metal, and cardboard, and topped by a large mask shaped like a bug’s head. 🦟

Feeling the itch to move? Join performer and choreographer Leslie Cuyjet for a Movement Workshop on Thursday, June 11 from 6:30–8pm! No prior dance or movement experience is required and all are welcome. Get tickets ➡️ https://www.newmuseum.org/event/06-11-26/

Released in theaters on this day in 1979: Ridley Scott's sci-fi horror classic "Alien" 👽🍿

The film featured artist H.R. Giger’s designs of the eponymous monster—known as a "Xenomorph" from the Greek word for “alien shape”—which embodied the artist’s “biomechanical” style where human and animal bones mesh with machine elements like tubes and wires.

Come see H.R. Giger's work on view in the "Hall of Robots" section of the exhibition "New Humans: Memories of the Future." 🤖

"My practice is mostly based on a strategy of putting props into real life and using my family members or my animals as performers. By using props, I can control the scenery of my life."

In her photographic series "Mama" (2018), artist Aneta Grzeszykowska portrays her body as an uncanny double of itself. Capturing her young daughter Franciszka alongside a lifelike silicone model of her own body, Grzeszykowska creates an eerie narrative of family life, in which the child plays with and cares for a doll, which is also her mother.

Experience the work in the "Automatic Women" section of the exhibition "New Humans: Memories of the Future" and read the full Art in America interview with Grzeszykowska ➡️ https://www.artnews.com/art-in-america/interviews/aneta-grzeszykowska-portraits-mask-1234784264/
