The Alice Austen House fosters creative expression, explores personal identity, and educates and inspires the public through the interpretation of the photographs, life and historic home of American photographer, Alice Austen (1866-1952). The House and its surrounding waterfront park are a nationally designated site of LGBTQ+ history, centering on the 56 year relationship between Alice Austen and

her life partner Gertrude Tate, providing an important window into pre-Stonewall LGBTQ+ history and enriching our understanding of the important life and work of Alice Austen.

in 1893 Alice took these photographs at the Berkeley Ladies Athletic Club. Soon after Daisy Elliot the gym director started dating Alice's friend Violet Ward.

In August of 1895 Daisy wrote to Alice from San Servan "My thoughts have been way over the water today even more than usual; perhaps your letter and one from Violet which came last night together have taken possession of me for I certainly feel decided longings in that direction"

By the beginning of 1897 Daisy and Violet had a dramatic break up and Daisy and Alice began dating. Daisy wrote to Alice on Valentine's Day "You know that I love you darling; there are many things I think of that I would like to do for you."
