For Diego Alcalde, the river is never just a river. It carries migration, nourishment, and the flow of life itself, a current that runs through his paintings alongside animals, childhood, and the human figure, each reflecting themes of continuity, movement, and belonging.

His process begins long before the canvas, with travel, observation, drawing, and reflection. These experiences become richly textured surfaces in a palette guided by emotion, intuition, and spiritual presence rather than realism. Drawing from diverse cultural influences while remaining connected to his roots, Alcalde invites viewers to reflect on childhood as a source of innocence and hope, and to reconnect with humanity’s bond to nature.

“Through quiet forms and vibrant textures, I express values such as respect, empathy, and harmony.” — Miki Goto

Who am I? For Miki Goto, this question lies at the heart of her abstract practice, shaped by Zen philosophy, self-inquiry, and emotional awareness. Her artistic journey is self-directed and informed in part by more than twenty years as a nail artist and consultant, where precision, color, and sensitivity to materials became integral to her creative expression.

Working with acrylic paint, sand, stones, and traditional Japanese gold leaf, Goto builds richly textured surfaces through contrasts of color, light, and darkness. In her work, color carries emotional and conceptual meaning beyond its decorative role. Through these layered compositions, she invites viewers to explore their own identities, engage in self-reflection, and consider how individuality and diversity can coexist in harmony.

Jane Johnson’s paintings explore the meeting point of landscape and imagination. Drawing inspiration from her travels and the natural beauty of European gardens, particularly the Italian cypress trees she first encountered during her travels in Europe, she creates works distinguished by vivid color, rich texture, and a thoughtful interplay of shape and space.

Bringing together figurative and abstract traditions, Johnson embraces what she describes as “magical realism,” allowing familiar elements of the landscape to take on an imaginative quality. Her work invites a closer look at the subtleties of color and form, revealing new ways of seeing the natural world.

Cracked bark, weathered rock, and shifting sand carry a record of survival in the work of Qasim Bugti. The Karachi-based artist reads these natural patterns as symbols of endurance, wisdom, and adaptation, tracing in their cracks and textures the delicate balance between strength and fragility.

Working with archival ink pens and pigments on 640gsm Arches paper, Bugti uses the precise techniques of miniature painting and meticulous mark-making to translate these natural forms. After experiencing repeated loss, he began to see art less as something permanent and more as a process in which the act of creating became more important than preserving. His work grew quieter, more layered, and more deeply rooted in resilience, capturing nature’s silent narratives of survival and interconnectedness while inviting viewers to reflect on the shared struggles and evolution of humans and the environment.

What makes a work of art feel right for you?

Beyond market trends and price points, collecting art often comes down to more personal questions. Will I still connect with this piece years from now? Will it complement my collection? And what makes a particular artist’s work worth following over time?

In our newest art blog, “What Collectors Actually Ask For (That the Market Doesn’t Talk About),” we look beyond market narratives to explore the thoughtful, personal decisions behind collecting art, drawing on the kinds of questions that arise in conversations with Agora’s advisory team.

Meet this week in : Julie Reby Waas 🎨

Julie’s patterned drawings in acrylic and watercolor start with something simple: vines, hearts or geometric shapes sketched as an outline. She doesn’t plan what goes inside them. She sets the rational side of her mind aside and lets intuition guide her hand, discovering the colors and patterns only as she fills each shape in. For her, the process is spiritual and also therapeutic, and part of the pleasure is not knowing where it will lead.

Alongside her studio practice, Julie works as a labor and employment lawyer. She draws inspiration from Piet Mondrian and Joan Miró, and has exhibited in galleries in New York, London, Miami, Innsbruck and Madrid. She hopes her work gives viewers a reason to pause in a busy day and smile.

Where the seen meets the unseen, Katja van den Bogaert explores the connection between inner experience and outer reality through expressive abstract painting, guided by her belief that we create our own reality.

Working with acrylics on linen canvas, she builds her compositions intuitively, layering and blending color, texture, and form. Using brushes, rollers, and sponges, she creates raw, textured surfaces before adding directional stripes and flowing, wave-like layers that bring movement and depth to the canvas. Her bright palette lends each work a fresh, energized quality.

For Van den Bogaert, painting is an instinctive process guided by emotion and inner feeling. She allows each composition to develop organically, seeking harmony between the seen and the unseen. Painting is her voice and her language, the truest version of herself, which she describes as a sacred communion of emotion, spirit, and physical presence.
