We need your help!

MVHM&G’s garden has a mystery rose in its possession. Can you help us identify it? 🤔🧐

This rose hasn’t bloomed in years but thanks to our dedicated volunteer who rescued it from encroaching ivy and Bartlett Tree Experts for trimming the overhanging plants, this now gets plenty of light and is blooming up a storm.

The lovely small pink blossoms don’t have any fragrance and we welcome any ideas about its variety🌹

We were honored to welcome the New York Historical Costumer Society for a group tour and tea party in our garden on Saturday, May 16th.

The weather was perfect and the handmade period clothes were breathtaking—it was incredible to see everyone in 1820s period dress in our historic house museum setting!

Thanks to Colette and all the members who created such a special event!

We are so grateful to Adam Pajkowski for his incredibly generous clothing donation. Adam, a member of the New York Historical Costumer Society, made the historically accurate 1840s frock coat, with velvet collar and detachable cape, slip vests, and top hat. Each is a work of art, and our mannequin now looks quite dashing thanks to him. We’ll use these items as touch objects during our tours for people with blindness and low vision, as well as for anyone else interested in understanding more about the construction and fabrics used in historical garments. Special details include an intricate windmill design in the lining of the frock coat. Thank you, Adam!

We love seeing pollinators at work in our garden, and here’s our beautiful Harison’s Rose, cultivated in New York City in the early 1800s and later carried west by homesteaders.

This bright yellow rose has a beautiful subtle fragrance that appeals to humans and bees alike! 🐝

It’s thriving this season after some careful trimming of overhead plants last fall helped open up it up to more direct sun.

Thanks to everyone who attended our events last week, from our open house for hotel concierges to our Earth Day Plein-Air Watercolor and Garden Tour/Tea Tasting programs!

The weather was cold and overcast, but we made the best of it: our painters moved into the gift shop, and our tea tasters were more than ready for something warm to drink after a chilly exploration of our garden.

Thanks to Peggy Roalf for her inspiring watercolor instruction and to our other volunteers who helped make these events possible!

Our next Plein-Air watercolor event with Peggy will be at 11am on Friday, May 15th (spots still available) and our Alice Ireys-designed garden is available for group programs, from tours to photography and Plein-Air watercolor programs.
