We’re delighted to share Robin Flanigan’s 6x6 Pics this week. Freelance writer, book author, essayist, and self-proclaimed ‘hopeless optimist,’ Robin shared about her selections, and why she chose artwork that “took me to another place—whether figuratively or through concrete imagery.”

“What is best about Rochester? Its people. And thankfully, RoCo’s annual 6x6 offers a safe space for them to share inner worlds, push boundaries, and enthusiastically honor what matters most. Whether using their artwork to challenge or celebrate, this year’s contributors reflected the creativity and diversity that make our city so easy to be proud of. That pride is why I’ve written three books about Rochester, most recently “100 Things to Do in Rochester Before You Die” and the forthcoming “Secret Rochester: A Guide to the Weird, Wonderful, and Obscure.” I’ve lived in five states and even more cities, and nowhere else have I found the kind of community we have here. It’s a kind of magic.”

Opening June 5

“BELONG” is our new public art installation by Gianna Stewart.

Comprised of words that the current administration has deemed as unsavory, unnecessary, or ‘woke’, Stewart boldly reaffirms the existence of these words and the people, causes, and concepts that they represent.

Come out to RoCo and meet Gianna on First Friday June 5 from 6-9pm! “BELONG” will continue on view 24/7 through November 15, 2026.

This week’s 6x6 Pics is curated by the City of Rochester🪻

Barbara Pierce, communications director, shared more about the selection:

“This year, the City of Rochester celebrates the 50th anniversary of our iconic City Mark, and we are proud to partner with RoCo for the 2026 6x6 exhibit. Rochester is a city of and for the arts — creativity and diversity of thought abound. RoCo’s annual 6x6 is an unparalleled combination of that creativity with community engagement, a breadth of perspectives, and unfettered access for all. Throughout the exhibit, there are unapologetic examples of
community pride and positivity that reflect our city’s strength and resilience, making this exhibit an important part of the City Mark’s 50th anniversary.

Community pride is reflected throughout 6x6 exhibits every year. These pieces reflect a breadth of perspectives that celebrate our thriving community.”

Thanks to the City of Rochester for partnering with us this year on our special theme! These and more Rochester-centric artworks are on view online at https://roco6x6.org/.

One of the best perks of helping with 6x6? Getting to experience all the incredible artwork up close.

Our amazing volunteers and staff have spent countless hours promoting entries, delivering postcards, receiving and unpacking artwork, helping with information entry, and of course, carefully hanging every single 6x6 artwork. After spending that much time with the artwork, it’s impossible not to become attached to a few favorites!

Many of us had a hard time choosing just one. We hope you enjoy some of our favorites and we always want to know: which ones would you hang on your own wall?

You can explore all 6,000+ artworks at roco6x6.org or see them in person during the In-Gallery Preview happening May 29–31.

And don’t forget, the Virtual Art Sale Kick-Off begins June 1!
