Maritime Industry Museum board Executive Director Matt Bonvento gave a fantastic and detailed account of the Slocum disaster at All Faith’s Cemetery in Middle Village today as part of the memorial tribute to the lives lost.

Matt’s talk focused on the heroic actions of the vessels, crews and first responders, many of whom went unrecognized, their names and deeds disappearing over the years, becoming nearly lost to history.

One of the missions of the Maritime Industry Museum is to ensure that the history of the industry and its people is passed down for generations to come.

Today we remember the more than 1,000 people were burned to death or drowned when the PS General Slocum caught fire in the East River off New York City on June 15, 1904. The passenger steamboat was carrying a church group and crew that totaled more than 1,300 to a picnic in Long Island.
