Happy ! Today, we celebrate museums and heritage across Scotland, and this year’s theme is the ; of course, we’ve chosen the letter V for Verdant Works.
🏭 The construction of Verdant Works began in 1833, when the High Mill area was built for local flax spinner, David Lindsay. At the time, the mill was surrounded by lush greenery; and thus, the name Verdant Works was chosen. (See also ‘Meadow Mill’ across the road from us!)
As the jute boom took over Dundee, Verdant Works also shifted to production of the coarse material. By 1889, however, production at Verdant Works had ceased, and the site was then used to recycle jute by-products, to cure rabbit skins, and as a base to deal in scrap metal.
In the 1990s, Dundee Heritage Trust took on Verdant Works and in September 1996, Verdant Works Museum – the city’s latest tourist attraction – was opened. Today, we continue to welcome thousands of visitors through the grand mill gates, to step back in time to Victorian Dundee, and be immersed in the lives of the millworkers – you can almost hear their whispers throughout the corridors here 💚
