Joan Eardley, Riverside Cranes (verso Horses), ED 587

The view is of the mouth of the River Kelvin, viewed from the Clyde. What is still regarded as the D. & W. Henderson ship-yard, is on the left of the picture. It was probably owned by Harland & Wolff at the time of the drawing but was possibly still trading under the Henderson name. The ship-yard on the right is the A. & J. Inglis yard where the ‘Waverly’ was built. At the time, this yard had a distinctive sheerlegs, which is shown in the drawing. In the background are the dwellings on the ridge of Partickhill - probably little altered even today. The railway crosses the Kelvin on a steel girder bridge, but is high above the land and is carried beyond the bridge on a stone viaduct with the rounded arches shown in the picture. It is reasonably easy to see some of these arches from behind the supermarket which is beside the present Partick Railway Station.

In the early 1940’s Eardley was particularly influenced by Stanley Spencer who had been selected to be a War Artist and spent six years painting at Lithgows shipyard in Port Glasgow. . Spencer’s interest in depicting details of everyday life and ordinary working people may have influenced her to celebrate the daily reality she saw around her. Her early drawings, like Spencer, were grounded in a love of humanity and a sense of kinship with the communities in which she lived and sketched. Group of figures ink and pastel 10 x13 cms
