Kirkcudbright Tolbooth

Kirkcudbright Tolbooth Built around 1625-1629. Now featuring Artistic & Local History, Contemporary Exhibitions & Gift Shop.

The Tolbooth Art Centre was opened in 1993 by H.M The Queen. The building was originally opened in 1629 (with later additions) as Kirkcudbright’s Tolbooth when it was used as a Town Council meeting place and office, Burgh and Sheriff Court, and the Criminal and Debtor’s prison. Its most famous prisoners were Captain John Paul, later known as John Paul Jones, hero of the American Navy, and Elspeth McEwan, the last woman burned for witchcraft in Galloway.

DON'T MISS this stunning pop-up exhibition at the Castle Douglas Art Gallery, near the library. Free Entry. Andre Yaniw. Wednesday 16 – Saturday 19 July, open 11-4.

Using the traditional craft of lino printing, Andre depicts the flora and fauna found in the rich landscape of Dumfries and Galloway, where he spends a great deal of time, and in the remembered places of his childhood in Doncaster. These images are grounded in drawing and filled with expressive colour, capturing both the immediacy of the natural world and the more personal, dreamlike quality of memory.

Andre Yaniw studied illustration in Manchester and went on to work as a freelance illustrator, represented by a London agent. Alongside his practice, he spent 38 years teaching Art and Design at York College, a role that deeply enriched his creative process and commitment to visual storytelling.

His prints draw from observation, imagination, and emotion. Whether inspired by the quiet beauty of a wildflower or the individual character of a wild animal, each piece is a response to place, both real and remembered. They are reflections on how nature shapes us, grounds us, and feeds our spirit.

Thank you everyone for your interest, this summer slot has now been filled. However if you wish to be part of the programme next year, please let us know and we will get back to you.

The Kirkcudbright Tolbooth has space in its exhibition programme for 6 August - 7 September 2025. If an individual artist, or a group of artists, would like to take this exhibition space please contact [email protected] as soon as possible.

The Tolbooth stands in a prime tourist location and is a key visitor attraction during the summer months. The site offers artists good security and staffing, free production of posters, leaflets, online reels, posts and articles, as well as local press presence wherever possible. Artists must be able to set the exhibition up themselves on this occasion (The Tolbooth is set up with easy to use hook and perlon hangers).
