🎉 BHI Community Open Day – A Great Success!

Our Community Open Day at Upton Hall on 12 September was a wonderful success, and it was great to welcome visitors to the home of the British Horological Institute and the Museum of Timekeeping.

Visitors had the opportunity to explore the Hall and our workshops, discover fascinating timepieces and meet members of the BHI staff and Board, learning more about the work of the Institute and its role in horology.

⌚ Our popular Basic Watch course is running this weekend at Upton Hall!

A big good luck to all our students joining tutor Joe Chambers for a hands-on introduction to mechanical watchmaking. 👏

During the course, students will learn to dismantle, clean, service, reassemble, oil and regulate a Seagull ST3600 pocket watch movement, using professional horological techniques.

And the best part? They’ll leave with a working watch they’ve serviced themselves! 🙌

No previous experience is needed, just curiosity and a steady hand. We hope everyone has a fantastic time in the workshop and enjoys discovering more about the fascinating world of mechanical timepieces.

This five-day practical course focuses on advanced lathe work, tool use and hand-finishing techniques, using the watchmaker’s lathe, Jacot tool, gravers and other fine tools.

The October edition of The Horological Journal features an intriguing table clock co-signed by East and Fromanteel. It is thought to be the first English full grande sonnerie clock and one of the earliest English clocks fitted with a minute hand, while the origins of its engraved case are the subject of further research.
