This working model of the mill was made by Martin, a fantastically talented engineer, over the past year while in prison.

As you can see from the intricate diagram, he ingeniously used materials he could lay his hands on, including a battery shaver, toilet brush holder, matchsticks and coffee stirrers.

It's now living at the mill. Come and see it in action!

Interesting fact:- Holgate Windmill was built in 1770 by George Waud from Camblesforth, near Selby. It is the only remaining windmill in York and one of only two in Yorkshire. The other is at Skidby, near
Beverley, but this is currently not working.
This means we are now the ONLY working windmill in Yorkshire.

Interesting fact:- On the third floor (the dust floor) is this wooden shaft made of one huge solid pine tree trunk. It is the one original piece of machinery
surviving from 1770!!

In medieval times York was the third largest English port after London & Bristol and at one time there were ship-repair yards on the River Ouse, so it has been suggested that it was a former ship’s timber but the shipyards had long gone by the time the mill was built. There was a countrywide industry
set up specifically to build and maintain wind and water mills, as there was a mill in every village, so it was probably purpose made for Holgate or brought in from another mill.
