Celebrating an engineering marvel! 🎉
Duchess of Hamilton is one of Britain’s most iconic locomotives. Built in Crewe in 1938 for the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS), it was designed to haul the most prestigious express trains between London and Glasgow. With its sleek streamlining and distinctive metallic Art Deco stripes, Duchess of Hamilton combined speed and style, becoming an enduring symbol of the golden age of Britain’s railways.
To celebrate this engineering marvel, The Royal Mint has struck a UK £2 coin in the locomotive’s honour. Created by artist Gary Breeze, the reverse design captures a side-on view of Duchess of Hamilton in motion, echoing the power and elegance that made the locomotive a star of Britain’s railways. The coin is available as a gold Proof, silver Proof Colour, Brilliant Uncirculated Colour and Brilliant Uncirculated edition, each of which is accompanied by illustrated packaging that brings the locomotive’s remarkable story to life.
