*Our Facebook ‘House Rules’*
We want our page to be a place where people can share how they feel about the National Trust and talk

about their experiences in a fun environment. We welcome feedback – both positive and negative. It helps us to learn and grow. These house rules aim to ensure everyone can enjoy themselves while they’re here:

We ask you to be nice and polite to one another, and respect each other’s views and comments. We ask all users to ensure your contributions are civil, polite, tasteful and suitable for all ages. We won't tolerate disruptive, offensive or abusive behaviour, unlawful or objectionable content. This includes any material which might be defamatory, offensive, infringing, obscene, lewd, pornographic, violent, abusive, insulting, threatening, harassing, discriminatory, blasphemous, indecent or otherwise unlawful or objectionable. It also includes any material which is aggressive, argumentative or likely to be construed as bullying, and it includes spamming or repetition - in particular the posting of off-topic material in subject-specific threads or areas.

*Moderation policy*
In general, we don’t moderate posts, except on the rare occasions - for example where someone has posted offensive, threatening or libellous content about named or identifiable individuals on our page. We have a duty to protect our staff and volunteers, so while deleting comments is totally out of character for us, our position is that any post containing a libellous accusations, should be removed. We’ll also remove any posts that in any way target individual teams or members of staff. We will not comment on our staff and volunteers in this way in public forums. If any correspondent has feedback to share about any individual members of staff or teams in the organisation, please get in touch with us directly. If an individual continues to post offensive, threatening or libellous content then we’ll be forced to block that person from the page. Similarly, if any individual repeatedly posts contributions of the nature noted above in the 'material' list, we'll again be forced to block that individual from the page (in this scenario, we will have warned the individual about their content at least twice previously). We won’t tolerate postings, content, or links that are racist, sexist or homophobic. We also don’t permit linking to or posting any content which endorses illegal activity, or any activities against the values of the National Trust. Finally, please note that the views on our page are created by our community and don’t necessarily represent the views or opinions of National Trust.

A couple of weeks ago, we posted a snapshot moment in nature of a fox, captured from our Senior Gardener when opening up at Goddards. This weekend, another magical moment was captured, with not one animal enjoying all the garden has to offer but TWO animals at the same time!

We know how important gardens are for wildlife. They can provide a source of shelter, as well as food and drink. Both the fox and tawny owl look right at home here. These images really do demonstrate the peaceful haven that Goddards is, only a stones throw from the busy city, for humans and wildlife alike and we can enjoy it together.

Thank you gardener Tom, for sharing these wonderful images for us to enjoy too.

When you’re all curled up, cosy and someone disturbs you before your morning alarm…

Gardener Tom got THAT look this morning, as he did his morning rounds and seemingly disturbed this little fella from his slumber, in the rock garden.

Goddards garden is a support for much wildlife; from insects to the many birds that can be seen and heard to rabbits, deer and other friends of Mr Fox. The sheltered, wilder area and pond provide the perfect environment for many animals to nest, rest and refuel.

Beyond the usual floral beauty and delightful lines of the garden… for some, the beauty of Goddards is found in the finer details around the building. All part of the attention to detail that the Arts and Crafts movement advocated, and all part of this superb design by Walter Brierley.

As York’s chocolate week kick off, it’s a great time to remember Goddards is more than just a gorgeous 5-acre Arts and Crafts inspired garden.

I was built as the family home of Noel Terry, built in the heyday of the Terry business in York. Noel became joint MD of the company in 1923 and during his time the company moved to the Bishopthorpe Road site with the iconic clock tower still visible today, the Chocolate Orange and All Gold went into production and revenue almost doubled.

Discover more about family and factory life: https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/yorkshire/goddards/the-history-of-goddards-and-the-terry-family - perhaps whilst enjoying some chocolate of you choosing, it might seem rude not to.

Uncover the story of Arts and Crafts-style home Goddards House and its owners the Terry family and the history of the family’s chocolate company.

Don’t miss the elephant’s ears as you walk down the drive towards the welcome area.

So called because of the shape of their large leaves, these Bergenia’s are a great addition to a border. With evergreen leaves that can tolerate sun or shade, not only do you get year-round interest, but delightful flowers on upright stems in early spring.

The forecast is looking good and so is the garden at Goddards if you fancy exploring.

See the garden with so much poise and promise for the season to come. And take a seat alongside some of the early stars of the show. Like it or loathe it, you’ll smell the hyacinths on the terrace before you see them.

With the recent sunshine and warmth in the air spring is springing.

When you wander at Goddards you’ll find the obviously gorgeous daffodils putting on their best display… but don’t miss the quieter corners. See what’s growing in the vegetable garden like early rhubarb and head to the glasshouse for more tender plants.

We’re proud to be part of National Lottery Open Week 2026 - a chance to celebrate the things National Lottery players help unlock across the UK.

From 7-14 March, we’re inviting players to discover what doors their ticket opens when they show any National Lottery ticket, Scratchcard or Instant Win Game. Get free entry to Goddards, Beningbrough and Nunnington Hall, or try all three. Check opening days and times for each place before travelling as they vary.

National Lottery Open Week is all about shining a light on hidden gems - the people, places, and moments. We can’t wait to welcome new visitors and say a heartfelt thank you to the players who make our work possible.

Return to an old favourite or try somewhere new. See where else to discover: https://www.lotterygoodcauses.org.uk/open-week
