Join us at The James Joyce Centre on Friday, 12 June 2026 at 7pm as soprano Lorna Windsor and pianist Nicole Panizza present the European premiere of Chamber Music, with the poems of James Joyce and songs of Ross Lee Finney.
This collection of beautiful poems written by James Joyce between 1901 and 1904, published in 1907, has long remained in the shadow of Joyce’s close-following famous works: Stephen Hero, Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Dubliners, Ulysses and Finnegan’s Wake. If Stephen Hero and Portrait of the Artist revealed much of Joyce’s personality, it can be said that there are clues, even strong hints, to those very personality traits and roots, also planted in the poems of Chamber Music. These are the poems of an exceptional young man, already marked by the weighty, vast culture he gained as a student and by his pithy and perspicacious views on life. Joyce, also a talented singer and passionate music lover, imbued his all his works with music, including the 36 poems of Chamber Music, which he deeply desired to be sung.

'Luulur' is a documentary by Raivo Kelomees exploring the surreal world of Estonian sound poet Jaan Malin and we are delighted to welcome them both to Dublin for this screening.

In the film “Luulur“, we follow Jaan Malin, who represents his stage name Luulur, on his journey towards the poetry slam and the “Crazy Tartu” festival. Sound poetry, originally defined by Ilmar Laaban, is a Luulur art form with roots in Dadaism and Surrealism. Jaan Malin, who has a complicated relationship with his father Ilmar Malin and the poet Ilmar Laaban, explores in his monologue the expectations and pressures that come from these influences. The structure of the film consists of several components, including Luulur’s biography and his performances at international experimental poetry events. Interviews with well-known authors bring out discussions about “meaningless” art, which is also reflected in Malin’s novel “Earth and World”, written in a fictional language.

The film explores how Luulur transcends his role models by creating dialogues with other artists such as Roomet Jakapi, Ivi Rausi and Tobias Kunze. The curation of the “Crazy Tartu” festival and the practice of sound poetry introduce Estonian surrealism and Luulur’s expressive work, which invites us to ask whether art must have a clear meaning.

This film explores the truly unique world of sound poetry as well as having parallels with Joyce.

We are absolutely delighted to support the Bloomsday Film Festival this year, because apparently simply reading Ulysses was not ambitious enough, now we are watching it, listening to it, walking through it, possibly being lightly haunted by it or in my case, eating my way through it!

In association with the James Joyce Centre, the festival runs from 11–16 June, celebrating James Joyce, Ulysses, poetry, literature, modernism, Dublin, short films, experimental work, music, performance and the general glorious madness that happens when the city imagines itself as a character in a novel - I showed international visitors around last year ... it was delightfully crazy!

Expect film screenings, poetry, live entertainment, a Magic Lantern show, and the sort of atmosphere that makes you think: yes, Dublin is impossible, but occasionally magnificently so.

Events take place in the beautiful surroundings of Belvedere, Dublin 1.

And because the James Joyce Centre and Bloomsday Film Festival people are lovely, they have given us a prize!
