Big news for Pewabic! Beginning July 1, Jim Leija will be Pewabic’s new Executive Director. Jim most recently served as Acting Director of the University of Michigan Museum of Art, where he led institutional operations for a major public museum, overseeing public engagement strategy, multimillion-dollar budgets, and cross-sector partnerships.

Prior to that, he held senior leadership roles at the University Musical Society. For more information about Jim’s background, check out our blog post linked below.

We’d like to thank Display Group, our Presenting Sponsors of this year’s Annual House & Garden Show, for supporting Detroit’s rich artistic and cultural heritage.

Founded in 1991 by Rick Portwood, who also served on the Pewabic Board of Trustees for many years, Display Group was born from Detroit’s over-a-century-old display and design tradition. This Detroit-based event planning collective of artists, craftspeople, and professionals fosters unforgettable experiences.

They have been in the business for over 35 years, and have an impressive project portfolio that includes the grand re-opening of Michigan Central Station, various music festivals including Movement and Mo Pop, the TED Talks 2023 Countdown Summit in Detroit, the 2024 NFL Draft, and so much more.

Thanks to the entire crew at Display Group, we are able to furnish the big tent to showcase the vast range of new ceramic artwork made by our team and independent artist community beautifully. We can't wait to see you this weekend!

As a 501(c)(3) arts nonprofit organization, we rely on your support to offer ceramic educational programs to our community, preserve and improve the National Historic Landmark pottery, and continue to handcraft pottery and tiles like our founders before us dating back to 1903.

Pewabic’s nonprofit mission is to enrich the human spirit through clay, and we truly couldn’t do that without you! Enhance your visit during our free and open to the public days of the Annual House & Garden Show with a hands-on workshop.

During this 1-hour, adult (16+) workshop, participants will choose 1 of 4 designs and learn how to bulb glaze in the same way as the Pewabic Glaze Team. Select the colors for your very own custom tile to gift to a loved one or cherish as a keepsake forever.

House and Garden Show Workshops - $60 per person
✨Friday, June 5, at 12 pm and 2 pm
✨Saturday, June 6, at 10 am, 12 pm, 2 pm, and 4 pm
✨Sunday, June 7, at 11 am, 1 pm, and 3 pm

You will take your tile home at a later date. Our team has to fire them in our kilns after the weekend concludes! If you’re visiting from out of town, we can arrange a shipment of your tile for a shipping fee.

Our Education Team is thrilled to announce a new series of Pewabic Uncovered Tours, granting participants exclusive access to the historic Pewabic tile work at Detroit’s iconic Guardian Building.

Join us for an unforgettable experience as a Pewabic docent leads you through the ‘Cathedral of Finance’ to get a closer look at work made by a rich blend of historic tile manufacturers, including Pewabic Pottery, and other multidisciplinary artists who contributed to this massive project.

House & Garden Show Preview Party Fundraiser attendees and those who donate $100 or more in support of Detroit’s nonprofit pottery will receive this year’s collectable, ceramic pin designed and hand-sculpted by Pewabic Marketing Director Amanda Rogers.

This year’s pin is an ode to the beauty of nature, paying homage to our founder’s deep appreciation for native flora and fauna. It is also a meditation on the importance of handcrafting art and the transformative power of clay.

Amanda notes, “This design is a poetic representation of the beauty and importance of each phase of life.” We can’t wait to unveil her work and the work of Pewabic craftspeople, and many members of our extended ceramic community during the fundraiser gala on Thursday, June 4.
