A major update in dinosaur science: researchers have described a new species, Spinosaurus mirabilis, from 95 million-year-old river deposits in what is now the Sahara Desert of Niger - the first new Spinosaurus species recognized in more than a century.

This theropod stood out for its tall scimitar-shaped head crest and interdigitating teeth, specialized for catching large fish. Unlike earlier ideas that spinosaurs were fully aquatic swimmers, S. mirabilis appears to have been a semi-aquatic wader, moving through inland rivers much like a modern heron.

Estimated at roughly 10โ€“14 meters long and 5โ€“7 tons, this species gives us fresh insight into spinosaurid diversity and how these giants lived and hunted in ancient freshwater ecosystems.

Meet Amphicyon ingens, one of the most intimidating predators to ever walk North America.

Despite the nickname โ€œbear dog,โ€ Amphicyon wasnโ€™t a bear or a dog. It belonged to an extinct family of carnivorous mammals called Amphicyonidae, predators that combined the strength of a bear with the jaws and agility of a large canid.

Living around 20โ€“15 million years ago during the Miocene, Amphicyon ingens could weigh over 300 kg (660 lbs). Its powerful limbs suggest it could wrestle prey to the ground, while its massive skull and crushing teeth were built to break bone.

This wasnโ€™t a sprinter. It was an ambush predator. When it attacked, escape was unlikely.

Before modern big cats and wolves ruled the land, the giant bear dog sat near the top of the food chain.

Prehistoric North America was not a safe place.

Tylosaurus was a massive mosasaur! A marine reptile that ruled the Late Cretaceous oceans like a scaled torpedo of death. Nothosaurus was an early marine reptile that lived during the Triassic Period, around 245 million years ago. Although fully air-breathing and descended from land-dwelling reptiles, it was well adapted to life in shallow coastal seas. Webbed limbs provided most of its swimming power, while its long body and tail helped with balance and steering.

Nothosaurus length varied by species, generally ranging from about 3 to 4 meters (10-13 feet) for common types, but larger species like N. giganteuscould reach up to 6 or even 7 meters (around 20-23 feet) long, making them medium to large Triassic marine reptiles similar to modern seals.ย 

Its narrow jaws were lined with sharp, interlocking teeth, ideal for catching slippery prey such as fish and small marine animals. Unlike later marine reptiles, Nothosaurus was likely semi-aquatic, spending time both in the water and on shore. Fossils show it as one of the key early experiments in reptile life in the sea, long before ichthyosaurs and plesiosaurs became dominant.

Chilotherium is an extinct genus of rhinocerotids lived in Africa and Eurasia during the Miocene through Pliocene living for 13.7โ€”3.4 mya, existing for approximately 10.3 million years.

It was a large, robust animal reaching 1.5-1.8 m in height and a weight between 1 and 2.5 tons, depending on the species.

Both sexes are hornless. The lower jaw has a widened symphysial part and large tusk-like second incisors separated by a broad diastema.

Chilotherium was named by Ringstrรถm in 1924. It was assigned to Rhinocerotidae by Carroll (1988); to Aceratheriini by Antoine and Saraรง (2005); and to Chilotheriini by Deng (2005).

Twelve species of Chilotherium have been described and 19 other species have been assigned the genus. Nine are considered valid: four from Europe, one from Iran, and four from China.

A female Chilotherium skull bears the distinctive bite marks of Dinocrocuta gigantea on the forehead. Based on the regrowth of bone around the injury, the rhinoceros escaped the predatorโ€™s attack and later recovered.

๐ŸŠ Prestosuchus

Prestosuchus chiniquensis was not a dinosaur, but a large predatory pseudosuchian archosaur from the crocodile-line branch of the archosaur family tree. It lived in what is now southern Brazil during the Middle to Late Triassic, around the Ladinianโ€“Carnian interval.

With a powerful skull, large serrated teeth and a heavily built body, Prestosuchus was among the formidable terrestrial predators that dominated ecosystems before dinosaurs became the major large-bodied land animals of later periods.

The Triassic belonged to far more than dinosaurs. ๐ŸŠ๐ŸŒŽ

New insights from Dmanisi, Georgia: the approximately 1.77-million-year-old early Homo skull known as D2280 preserves unusual damage that may reflect interaction with a large carnivore.

Several marks on the back of the skull have been interpreted as possible evidence of predation or scavenging. Saber-toothed cats, hyenas, and other powerful carnivores shared this landscape with early humans, but scientists have not determined which animal caused the damageโ€”or whether it occurred during an attack or after death.

The fossil offers a striking reminder that early humans were not always apex predators. They lived within a complex food web and could sometimes become prey themselves.

Although reindeer are often said to โ€œchange eye color,โ€ the seasonal transformation actually occurs in the tapetum lucidum, the reflective layer behind the retina that also produces eyeshine in animals such as cats.

During the bright Arctic summer, this layer reflects a golden to gold-turquoise color. In winter, prolonged darkness causes structural changes that shift the reflection to deep blue. The winter tapetum may scatter more light back through the retina rather than reflecting it directly out of the eye, increasing retinal sensitivity while slightly reducing visual sharpness.

This remarkable adaptation helps reindeer detect movement in the dim, blue-dominated twilight of the Arctic winter an environment that shifts between continuous summer daylight and prolonged periods of polar night. Reindeer are the only mammals currently known to undergo this seasonal change in the tapetum lucidum. ๐ŸฆŒโ„๏ธ
