"No. 6: Lipstick", by Kiyoshi Kobayakawa, printed in 1931. A student of the painter Kaburagi, Kiyoshi Kobayakawa concentrated on delicate depictions of beautiful women across painting and print. At times, he broke from bijin-ga convention and portrayed his subjects in the styles of the early 20th century, such as dressed western clothes or smoking ci******es. As collector and admirer of ukiyo-e, he drew inspiration from the color and compositions of 17th-19th century printmakers. Between 1930 and 1931, Kiyoshi self-published the six-print series Styles of Contemporary Makeup (kindai jisesho). Half of the women pictured exude the particular femininity of the (modern girl), while the remaining three designs echo Kiyoshi’s contemporaries, featuring women in private moments in front of their toilette.

"Night Rain at Karasaki" by , printed in c. 1810. It is said that in 1500, the courtier Konoe Masaie composed poems for eight famous sites around Lake Biwa, near the ancient capital of Kyoto. One verse mentions Karasaki Shrine and the giant, sacred pine tree that grows on the western shore of the lake. Similar to Konoe's poem, Hokusai illustrates the enormous tree standing strong in the windy, pouring rain. The third-generation of the pine tree can still be visited today at Karasaki Shrine in Otsu City.
