Artspace Gallery is proud to announce the James Parker “Open Door” Grant, created to amplify the voices of Richmond, VA artists from all backgrounds, particularly those identifying with underrepresented races and ethnicities, early-career creators, or under-resourced artists. By removing financial and institutional barriers, this opportunity aims to significantly change the winning artist's career trajectory.

The James Parker “Open Door” Fund was established in 2026 at Artspace to honor the memory of our dear friend, former member, and dedicated artist, James Parker, through a generous donation from his widow, Beq Parker. This exhibition invites artists to explore hidden forces, dreams, memories, spirituality, mystery, imagination, and unseen systems that shape our experience of the world. About the juror:
Robert Stuart :

Robert grew up mostly overseas his father worked for USAID and UNESCO. He attended Boston University’s School for the Arts, a rigorous, traditional program with much figure drawing. Philip Guston was a major influence there.

After living in Guam for eighteen months, Boston again, then Virginia, he had a Teaching Assistantship and earned an MFA at James Madison University. Following this he launched a career as a painter of landscapes and still lifes. He enjoyed success in galleries and was selected for the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Un/Common Ground exhibit.

After ten years established in this representational style, but with episodes of experimentation in abstraction, his response to abstract painting became so evident that he could no longer deny it. Discovering Agnes Martin’s paintings and writings was crucial. Finally, after a trip to Japan visiting Zen gardens, a vivid dream of a large, red, abstract painting was so compelling that he set out in a new direction. Soon after the move to abstraction, he was chosen for the New Orleans Museum of Art Triennial, and not long after that, he received an Academy Award in Art from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

Recently, Robert has honed his curatorial experience as a one of the directors at Gallery 22 in Staunton, VA.

Monday's Artist Member highlight ~ Robert Meganck "Drawing is linear mark making. Drawing is a way of understanding the world. It is a way to record our ideas. Drawing differs from illustration and painting in that it is personal. I illustrate to communicate an idea to an audience, but I draw for me. I may draw the figure, a building or a still life as an observational exercise. It differs from photography because I can take a picture and remain relatively objective, I can take a photograph of a scene without really seeing it, but drawing is completely subjective. Every stroke is a conscious decision. Illustration is simply drawing with a point – a point of view. You can doodle abstract lines on paper and identify it as a drawing, but if those same lines are drawn as a map for the purpose of giving someone directions, it is an illustration."

“Duets,” opening reception, 6-8pm, Friday, Oct. 23. Conversations through art. This innovative exhibition invites each Artspace Artist Member to choose an artist from their life – a friend, family member, colleague, or anyone whose unique viewpoint inspires them – to exhibit alongside their own work. The pairing is intentionally open to interpretation, encouraging a diverse range of thematic, material, or conceptual dialogues between the two pieces.
