Pequeño’s practice engages themes of displacement, migration, and cultural inheritance, reflecting the complexities of Mestizo and Mexican American identity. ⁠

The work featured in 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑨𝒈𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝑹𝒆-𝒆𝒎𝒆𝒓𝒈𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆 draws on a spectrum of cultural signifiers related to transportation and migration, “where motion is not only physical but psychological and generational.” ⁠

The title 𝘼𝙡𝙠𝙖𝙡𝙞 𝙎𝙝𝙞𝙛𝙩 references lithium’s classification as an alkali metal, and points to processes of chemical and environmental change. Ruhwald invites viewers to reflect on how these material realities shape both our environment and our understanding of it.⁠

Drawing from memories of growing up in California in the 1990s, Winston recalls the ever-present decorative plastic fruit baskets that adorned suburban homes. Known for his basketball wall sculptures that explore embedded history and the abstraction of an object’s past, Winston transforms the fruit basket, an emblem of domestic kitsch, into elegant sculptural forms.
