"There's Something About Alligators!"

People are fascinated with the American Alligator because of their reputation as fearsome beasts and symbols of an ancient past living today. Every day, one reads another story about a large alligator intruding into ordinary lives. The Great American Alligator Museum in New Orleans exists to showcase all aspects of the American Alligator: scientific modern a

nd fossil specimens, alligators in folk art, unusual household items, vintage leather goods, movies, and toys. Remarkably, no other museum in the world pays homage to the American Alligator. We hope that the museum will expand everyoneโ€™s view of the Alligator beyond the sensational stories in the news and expose the many ways the American Alligator has become a part of American daily life.

Alligator or Crocodile? Hereโ€™s the easiest way to tell the difference! ๐Ÿง

Look at the snout. Alligators have a wide, rounded "U-shaped" snout (perfect for crushing shells), while crocodiles have a longer, pointed "V-shaped" snout. Also, when an alligatorโ€™s mouth is closed, you canโ€™t see its lower teeth. Crocs? Theyโ€™ve got a toothy grin no matter what! ๐Ÿฆท๐Ÿฆท Follow for more tips on how to identify the wildlife in your own backyard! ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿ”

A most inspiring alligator quote from The Great American Alligator Museum's feature in Obscura ๐Ÿ‘‰
"In addition to surviving the asteroid impact that wiped out the dinosaurs 65 million years ago, these finely tuned survival machines can hold their breath underwater for up to 45 minutes and can chomp down on prey four times more forcefully than a lion. Some larger specimens can even go a year without food." ๐ŸŠ๐ŸŠ๐ŸŠ

Think American alligators are just tough predators? Think again! Gators have a soft side too. They are surprisingly dedicated mothers, known as being the most maternal crocodilian. ๐ŸŠโค๏ธ

Female gators guard their nests for 65 days and, once the hatchlings emerge, the mother will carry them in her jaws to the water. Sheโ€™ll stay with her "pods" for up to two years to protect them from predators.

Louisiana lawmakers consider the creation of a recreational alligator hunting season.

This would "dovetail" into the commercial alligator hunting season already in existence.

The consideration of this idea is a sign of Louisiana's alligator conservation program landmark success, rehabilitating the alligator population back from the brink of extinction to a healthy population of 2 million wild alligators.

However, some raise concerns about how recreational hunting may affect populations and the fairness to commercial operators. Nothing will happen until the Louisiana Alligator Advisory Council meets. Stay tuned right here....
