I just wrote the review of Robert A.M. Stern's final book, NEW YORK 2020, in the new Architectureal Record Magazine (Dec. 2025 issue). An excerpt he would have loved ----"Hudson Yards. Like a 30-acre chunk of Dallas that was airlifted and dropped into New York, this mostly flavorless and certainly anti-urban development is a wonder of planned corporate mediocrity, and it is covered in great detail in the book—a blessing for future architects, who will now know how to avoid repeating any aspect of it." I'm so bummed it came out too late for him to read it.

These guys... Bob Stern and Frank Gehry. Lifelong friends. They met in 1966 at the "White, SIlver, Grey" conference at UCLA. That's 60 years of friendship spanning what must be one of the the greatest divides of 20th century architectural beliefs. Chose your friends wisely-- the best one's you may go the full distance with. We should all be so lucky.

Frank Gehry (1929-2025). Here's us in discussion at Yale where we taught studio together. I would drive us both between NYC and New Haven often. I learned so much in these rides - stories abound. I feel like Mount Rushmore is crumbling. Between Bob Stern dying last Thursday and this, I'm a puddle. Architecture will never be the same.

Bob Stern praying to a 3d-printed model in my office. I believe his exact words were "It looks like an ornate chocolate drink dispenser for a bar mitzfah." I had a zoom with him to catch up only a few weeks ago and he still had some great zingers! God I'm gonna miss him.
