💧 Did you know that a working model of the entire NYC water system is hidden in plain sight at the Queens Museum?

The Relief Map of the New York City Water Supply System is a roughly 600 square foot topographical model built for the 1939–40 World's Fair, with blinking lights that trace reservoirs, dams, and aqueducts carrying water from upstate New York into the city. It spent decades in storage before being rediscovered in 2005 and restored through a partnership with the Department of Environmental Protection.

Today, the system it depicts extends more than 125 miles from the city, comprising 19 reservoirs, three controlled lakes, and roughly 7,000 miles of water mains, tunnels, and aqueducts, bringing over a billion gallons of fresh water to the five boroughs every day.

💡 Tiffany's leaded-glass lamps were an instant sensation when they launched in 1898! See why in "Tiffany's Lamps: Lighting Luxury," on view now in The Neustadt Gallery at the Queens Museum.

When Tiffany's leaded-glass lamps debuted in 1898, they were an instant hit for combining beauty and function, softening the glare of early electric light while transforming a household object into a work of art. Each lamp was handmade using costly materials like hand-rolled glass and cast bronze, and prices varied widely depending on size and design.

Explore the Collection at QM to learn more about how they were made. Visit the 🔗 in bio to plan your trip!

On the 25th anniversary of September 11, the Queens Museum remembers and honors the lives lost and all those impacted by the events of that day. In 2002, the Museum debuted the "Tribute in Light" on The Panorama of the City of New York. Today, the Panorama preserves the Twin Towers as part of the model's historic representation of New York City. In remembrance, the Museum's facade will be illuminated in blue this evening.

"Tribute in Light" was originally presented by Creative Time () and The Municipal Art Society (), conceived by artists Julian LaVadiere (.laverdiere) and Paul Myoda () in collaboration with architects John Bennett and Gustavo Bonevardi of Proun Space Studio, architect Richard Nash Gould, and lighting consultant Paul Marantz.
