This year’s World Series is bursting with technology and math. After years of testing in the Minor Leagues, the Automated Ball-Strike (ABS) Challenge System reached the big leagues in 2026. This system uses advanced technology to track the ball in relation to the new, most precise strike zone in the league's 100+ year history.

Prior to ABS, the strike zone moved around and used ambiguous measurements like “top of the shoulders to the knees,” or “mid-torso to beneath the kneecap.” This was difficult to enforce, plus it could vary widely even between players of the same height who crouched differently while at bat. Today, for all hitters, the top end of their zone will be 53.5% of their measured height, and the bottom will be 27% of that height.

By the numbers:
🎥To help the system work, ballparks are equipped with 12 cameras. Five are dedicated solely to tracking the movement of the ball.
❎Three people may issue a challenge to the umpire's call: the catcher, pitcher or hitter.
⌛During Spring Training, reviews took 14 seconds on average, adding roughly 1 minute to the game.
👍During Spring Training, 72% of fans said ABS had a positive impact on their experience.
⤴Teams are using ABS challenges more frequently in the postseason (4.8 per game) compared to the regular season (4.3 per game).

Innovation underway! 🚧

The Speed exhibition explores motion and time across science and technology, and we feel there's no better time than the present to add momentum to Speed. Work is already in progress to retire certain exhibits, rehome some fan-favorites and add new experiences. Swipe to see renderings of the finished space, plus a sneak peek of the real deal captured during our staff's recent trip to the workshop in Amsterdam!

This work is happening in phases and the exhibition will never be entirely closed. You can always run on the Sprint Track or experience the Hurricane Chamber! We'll share additional updates as the work ramps up, so stay tuned!

The name is Speed, but we know that you can't rush perfection! We're patiently waiting to unveil this refresh in early 2027.
