When Henry Francis du Pont inherited the Winterthur estate in 1927, he had a vision—not just to grow his collection of American antiques, but to build a home worthy of them. ✏️

Architect Albert Ely Ives designed an architectural framework specifically to house historic woodwork salvaged from other buildings—a groundbreaking concept in American decorative arts. The 1930s renovation brought sweeping changes: a connecting passage, a service wing, and the now-iconic Port Royal Entrance Hall.
