I constantly look at the everyday things around us: the neighbor's house, a tree, a stack of mandarins. I find it all intriguing and beautiful. This piece grew out of something I saw during a residency in Italy: a hedge with doors in it. When they were opened, it looked like an altar. Italy has many, many altars, so I decided to explore that topic. The pelican is a lesser-known symbol of the Eucharist in the Catholic faith.

I believe the arts need support in our community. Creativity makes us come alive. Without a place to see and participate in the arts, our city would feel empty.

What canโ€™t be buried? What refuses to disappear?

Stacy Kranitzโ€™s exhibition title, Ainโ€™t No Grave Gonna Hold My Body Down, draws from the gospel song โ€œAinโ€™t No Grave,โ€ made famous by Johnny Cash, a fitting reference for a project rooted in resilience, resistance, and the enduring power of the human spirit.

A recipient of the prestigious Images Vevey Book Award, Kranitz has also published a companion monograph of the exhibition. We have a limited number of copies available in The CoSHOP, offering you the opportunity to take a piece of this powerful project home with you.

Come experience the exhibition, the culmination of Kranitzโ€™s multi-year project examining how Appalachia has been representedโ€”and misrepresentedโ€”through photography and other media for decades. Stacy Kranitz: Ainโ€™t No Grave Gonna Hold My Body Down is part of the 2026 FotoFocus Biennial: The Long View.
