This is one of my early murals, painted in 1990 in the newly constructed Swimming pool Pavillian on the property of an early 19th C. Greek Revival mansion .
I designed the mural based on the gardens on the property which were the last major project of the prominent landscape architect, J. Fletcher Steele, after I toured the grounds. The mural is not a depiction a single spot in the gardens but rather, it incorporates elements that impressed me, as I composed my own imaginary landscape, which I felt reflected the environment of which my work would become a small part.
The gardener’s straw hat sitting on the painted step leading into the mural belonged to the owner, Mrs. Nancy Turner, who commissioned me to paint the mural.

“A Tuscan Retreat” | 20”x30” | oil on canvas.
This was a recent commission I took when my client came to me after renting this rustic villa for a summer vacation with her family. Her daughter-in-law took a picture of the villa & vinyard with the hope of enlarging it to hang in her home, only to find out the resolution wasn’t high enough to make a quality image.
Needless to say I took some liberties with color and light to enhance the image. My client was thrilled, and asked me to help her select the frame.
I included the last image in this post is the original photo to show what I had to work with.

When received this,my fourth and largest commission from Steinway & Sons, we decided on a 1 year timeline from initial design work to completion. I did no publishing on social media, as was agreed upon in the contract until the piece was
finished. The piano was commissioned for Steinway's showroom in Shanghai, China. The design was to be indigenous to my own painting style and concept. The only requirement was that all visible surfaces were hand painted and finished in acrylic media.
It was early spring in my home town and given such freedom, I decided that Rochester NY would be the source of my inspiration and imagery for the piano .
I began the task of realizing the Idea into a design. The first problem i needed to tackle was how to effectively paint imagery on the legs...

Twelve years ago this month I completed my fourth and most exciting Art Case Piano for Steinway & Sons. We called it Springtime. These are a few of the studies along with my original concept drawing for the project.

There is a lot to be said about all that went into the creation of this Art Case Piano

This post is the beginning of an album that documents the process of creating that piano from begining to end.
